‘Rheingold Project’ 1991 Hochschule Dusseldorf

In 1991 I went to Dusseldorf, Germany with the Erasmus Program as part of my Hons Degree. My Rheingold project was awarded a Distinction and it formed the basis of my final degree show in 1992.

The project brief was to use shoreline of The Rhein as inspiration, using found objects to create a collection of 3D objects.

My concept was initially formed by building sculptures on the shoreline, using found objects. Since it was very windy, I became interested in the way the wind was changing the shapes of the structures I had built. I created a large book of drawings and photographs of all my observations, working out ways to translate this into finished pieces. My final pieces were items of clothing, made from single pieces of fabric, which I had cut and sewn to recreate the idea of materials being inflated. Certain items I found, such as the silver birch bark, were very informative in helping me create the final pieces.
